Case Study

Young Adult Project

The Young Adult Project is an Employability Programme that employs young adults ages 19-24 as CLD Assistant Support Workers. This case study is on the group from April 2024 to March 2025. The Programme was ran by North Lanarkshire Council's CLD Adult Learning Team for the 3rd time with it's own team: Marita Nicol as the Development Officer, Dawn Gray and Kai Etherington as CLD Support Workers.

Our Mission

The Purpose

Qualifications

The Young Adult Project's purpose was to give young adults aged 19-24 a fair chance at employment to the young adults who have barriers to employment. These barriers are similar to what is described in the Adult Learning Strategy 2022-27 such as: mental wellbeing, phyisical disbility, confidence, past experiences within employment and learning difficulties.

The Young Adults embraced this opportunity as they had excellent 1-to-1 mentoring and support from the staff throughout the day. The staff gave all opportunities to develop skills that are used in their personal life and that can be use to assist in gaining employment.

During the course of the project, all of the learners were given the opportunity to gain qualifications and some opted in. Here is a list of some of the qualifications that the staff achieved:

  • SQA Level 4 ICT Basics

  • PDA Adult Learning

  • First Steps to Youth Work

  • First Steps to Family Learning

  • First Aid at Work

  • Outdoor First Aid

  • REHIS

  • National 4/5 Maths

  • Walk Leader Training

  • Adult Achievement Award

Positive Destinations

After a year in the project all our staff were given access to the internal vacancies for 6 months after the project ended in March 2025. As of May 2025, other destinations include:

  • 8 staff gained further employment

  • 2 staff went to university with one choosing UWS

  • A great selection of qualifications

Did it work?

Overall, I do believe the project worked for everyone. However, even though 11 participants did gain a Positive Destination, that is 11 out of the 18 who participated and those 7 people did not gain a positive destination. The reason for the 7 others not gaining a Posive Destination has not been disclosed and is something that might not come out.

However, the Young Adult Project has been funded for another year with 16 new Assistant Support Workers being employed and have started in Spring 2025 and will run until Spring 2026. This is because of the review that the project got as a part of North Lanarkshire Council's Brighter Futures Review. It is unknown at this time whether the project will continue another year however the experience and the opportunites that the young adults had will be remembered!
